Most mold jobs land between $1,500 and $9,000 on Fixr's figures, roughly $10–$30 per square foot treated. Basements: $1,500–$4,000 per Fixr, $500–$3,000 per Bob Vila. Black mold: $800–$7,000. Whole-home work: $10,000–$30,000. Inspection by itself: $450–$800. National figures, not Louisville rates.

Why do mold remediation costs vary so much?

  • Square feet affected. At Fixr's $10–$30 a square foot, a 40-square-foot patch and a 400-square-foot basement are different jobs.
  • What has to come out. Moldy drywall, insulation, paneling and carpet are cut out and bagged. Putting a finished basement back together can cost more than the removal.
  • Access. An open, unfinished basement is quick to contain. A low crawl space, a tight attic or a ceiling in a plaster house takes longer.
  • The water fix. Regrading, a gutter repair, a sump pump or a plumbing repair is often a separate bill from a separate trade. Fixr lists a minor leak repair at $150–$350 and a roof leak at $400–$2,500.
  • Lab work. Fixr prices air sampling at $500–$700, and plenty of jobs go ahead without it.

The Louisville line to watch: basements

Two things push Louisville jobs toward the basement rows of the table. The housing is old: about 61% of homes in the city were built before 1980 (U.S. Census, ACS 2020–2024), and older block, brick and stone foundations tend to let groundwater through. And the wettest stretch of the year is spring, when March through May average 14.58 inches of precipitation at the airport (NOAA normals).

The two guides disagree on basements, $1,500–$4,000 at Fixr against $500–$3,000 at Bob Vila, which is a fair reminder that these are wide national bands. A bare concrete basement with mold on a few joists sits near the bottom. A finished one with soaked carpet, paneling and studs sits near the top, and if the water also needs drying first, look at Fixr's combined water and mold range of $2,700–$10,000.

Where the figures come from

Nobody publishes what Louisville mold jobs actually cost, so this guide uses named national sources: Fixr's mold remediation guide (updated August 2025), Fixr's mold inspection and water damage restoration guides (both updated January 2025), and Bob Vila's mold remediation cost guide (updated April 2024). Where the two disagree, both figures are shown. Hold a written quote up against them; they say nothing binding about what a given company will bill.

Use Kentucky's standard to read a quote

Kentucky's 2010 mold law ties remediation companies to five IICRC S520 principles. They make a handy checklist for any written scope:

  1. Safety and health: does it say how the household and workers are protected?
  2. Project documentation: does it list the rooms, the square footage and what will be removed?
  3. Contaminant control: is plastic containment or negative air included where needed?
  4. Contaminant removal: does it say what is cleaned and what is thrown out?
  5. Contamination prevention: does it name the moisture source and who fixes it?

Before signing, get the price on paper broken into lines, and find out in writing what warranty, if any, the company offers.

Cost questions

How much does it cost to have a mold removed?

Fixr's national band for an ordinary job spans $1,500 to $9,000 and averages $3,500. A small bathroom patch may run about $500; black mold work spans $800 to $7,000 by area. Square footage drives the bill more than anything.

How much does it cost to remove mold from a house?

Fixr and Bob Vila agree on $10,000 to $30,000 when mold runs through an entire home. Most homes need far less than that. Mold confined to one basement, attic or bathroom usually falls in that room's row of the table.

Are these what Louisville companies charge?

Not necessarily. Fixr and Bob Vila publish national bands, and a Louisville bill can come in above or below them. What matters is the written figure offered once someone has actually walked through your house.

Do I have to pay for testing too?

Only when it earns its keep. Fixr's figure for air sampling is $500 to $700. When the mold is visible and the leak is known, testing rarely changes the plan. It is worth it when there is a smell with no visible source, or for a sale or an insurance claim.
